The Family School – Year 1 is for homeschools who desire the LDS, Principle Approach that American Heritage School has incorporated for 43 years. The Family School – Year 1 is the first in a six-part series designed and developed in collaboration with hundreds of LDS homeschooling parents. It provides parents with a comprehensive resource for teaching children together of all ages 4 – 14 in history, literature, science, geography, art, and music. Each lesson is crafted to engage learners of various ages, reminiscent of a one-room school house. Lesson plans include questions, activities, and assignments geared toward four age groups (Early Elementary 4 – 7, Middle Elementary 8 – 9, Upper Elementary 10 – 12, and Middle School 13-14), which creates a family classroom environment, while providing an effective and rich leveled-learning experience.
Note: We are now pre-selling the 2nd Edition of The Family School – Year 1, which includes extensive revisions and improvements gleaned throughout the first year with our 2012/13 families. The digital version will be finished by the first week of June, and printed copies will be mailed the first week of July, 2013.

Samples, Scope & Sequence for Each Subject
We have posted three sample lessons, as well as, the six-year scope and sequence for each subject here.

I would love to see samples of your complete program. Is that possible?
Thank you, Shalynn! I just sent you the email with the links. Enjoy! – Peter
I am excited to see a curriculum that is accessible. I attended American Heritage School as a girl, and would like to offer that experience to my children. Will you please also send samples to me? Thank you!
That’s great, Shauntai! did you attend in the old Pleasant Grove chapel, or in the new campus next to the Mt. Timpanogos Temple? I’ll send you the links to the samples right away. Let me know if you have any questions. Thanks! – Peter
I would also love to see the samples of this curriculum! Sounds amazing!
Karyn,
You can see the FREE SAMPLES here http://ldscurriculum.org/free-sample/
I would also love a link to the sample lessons. Thank you!
We finally got them posted online, but I also will send you the links as well. Thanks Sarah! – Peter
Sarah, you can see the FREE SAMPLES here http://ldscurriculum.org/free-sample/
Does the curriculum come as the books appear or is it a digital version? What about this year as it is coming our in pieces…what format will that be delivered in? Have you thoughts of an ebook option to make the resource more affordable for more families?
Great questions, Julie! Actually yes, we have considered this and will be posting the digital price this week. We’ve had a few families asking for this, and we’d love to offer it digitally as well. For those who’ve ordered the print version, we will be shipping in binders as the image shows. They will receive each quarter, or term, independently throughout the year. Thank you! – Peter
Can some of the lessons of the curriculum used in a mom school co-ops (as a extracurricular class) sometimes? What is your policy about using parts of the curriculum to children outside the immediate family sometimes?
Absolutely, Lilian! This is a great way to share the cost. We only ask that if you get to the point where you need to print a copy of a lesson, that you or another in the co-op would purchase another copy. Sharing is fine; but printing, copying, and redistributing infringes on the copyright.
Thanks for asking!
Peter
This is amazing! Okay here are my questions. Math? Will that ever be offered? Also wondering if you will be offering the digital version with the books? Do you have more photos of what these binders look like? I have a few years before I need to start homeschooling so in March do you plan to have all the books available to mail all at once? And finally will you be releasing one per year and will they be equally priced as the first one? Will you have discounts to purchase the entire six years? Few! I think I am finished.
Sharee, those are great questions.
First, no, we will likely not provide a math curriculum, as it is a leveled learning subject and many good options online and in print (Saxon, Math U See, etc.) We will be providing supplemental math, however, in the near future.
Next, I think you asking if you can purchase the digital download and then purchase the binders apart, correct? If so, yes, we can sell the binders as a standalone product if you’d like for $50.00
Next, yes, in March we’ll have the entire Year 1 curriculum complete and will be mailing it as a complete unit.
Lastly, yes, we will be releasing one year at a time and the cost will be similarly priced.
Thanks Sharee!
Peter
Thank you for your comment. I will wait to purchase the entire 1st year as I have two years before I need to start to homeschool. Thank you. I love the samples and the curriculum. I believe this is what I will be using to homeschool.
I would love some samples of this for my highschoolers and 5 year old grandson. It would be nice to be able to do them all together.
Hi Laurie! You can see many sample of The Family School by clicking on my name above this reply. You can also see samples of our Online High School courses by visiting the website below and using username “sample” and password “sample”. Wish you the best! – Peter

Hi,
Is the printable version, printed in color? (I see in the 1 month sample lessons that the pdf’s are in color)
Also, if this is purchased. Would I just need to come on this site to print out the lesson handouts prior to teaching the lesson?
thank you,
Stacie
Stacie, yes it is in full color as seen online as a digital download. However, if you purchase the printed version from us, then we only print the first page of each lesson in color and the remaining “guts” of the lesson are in black and white. Once you purchase it (or even if you are trying the new samples) you would visit our online library http://network.latterdaylearning.org/page/library to print any handouts you may need. Let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks! – Peter
What about simple subjects like spelling? Does it fall under Literature? What about math?
Natasha
Natasha, this curriculum does not include language and math, because they are level based and you would not be able to teach kindergarten math and 6th grade math at the same time, like you can do with the subjects included in the Family School.
At American Heritage School, we use Saxon. We’ve used it for decades and it’s worked well for our purposes.
I’ve heard great things about Math-You-See as well.
There are several good language programs, but not one that stands out as a clear winner from the homeschool moms I’ve worked with. There’s Riggs, A Beka Book, Shirley, Rod and Staff, and so many others that we use here at that school and are used for homeschooling.
My brother recommended I may like this web site. He was totally right.
This put up truly made my day. You cann’t imagine simply how a lot time I had spent for this info! Thank you!
I’m new to the homeschooling concept and I love this! My question is I only see year 1, are the other years not yet available? If not is there a guarante that they will each become available before the next school year begins? Wil they also be sent in auarters or will they be available all at one? I am also assuming the price listed is only for the first year and that each additional years cost will be comparable? Thanks!
Sheena, all great questions. Yes this is Year 1, and we will be producing Year’s 2 – 6 over the next few years.
1. Although there is not guarantee with something like this, it has been very well received by the LDS Homeschooling community and is impacting already nearly 1000 students. The program is also self-sustaining, meaning it does not cost the school anything to continue. All indicators point to this program continuing and increasing over the years. There is a huge need among homeschoolers AND non-homeschoolers to have an LDS, faith-based curriculum to facilitate or supplement academic learning.
2. Year 1 is on track to complete by March 15. We will then begin Year 2, which we hope to have ready in whole by August 2013. Shipping in quarters was important this year since where just beginning and wanted to have an opportunity to refine each quarter at a time.
3. Yes this is the price for Year 1 and subsequent years will be comparable.
Thank you, Sheena!

I would like to purchase the curriculum, if I do that now, would I get the first 3 quarters worth of material in my first shipment? thanks!
Brianna, if you purchase today you will get 1&2 quarter right away. The 3rd quarter is scheduled to go out on Jan 4th, 2012. Let me know if you have any questions. Kristina Law
I saw that the sample lessons made reference to power point presentations, and to videos. Are those available on CDs? do they come with the books? Thanks.
Maraly, those are all available in our online library under handouts. Here is the link to the online library http://network.latterdaylearning.org/page/library. Let me know if you have any questions.
Hi, I have 3 kiddos, is this “year 1″ to be taught to all levels at once while adding individual level literature and Math? If so, does Each year build on the previous year or is it ok to start younger students on the same year older students are working on? For example my first grader could start this year, and maybe my Pre-schooler, but my 3 year old would be starting in year 2 or 3.
Kellie, yes The Family School is designed so that you can teach K-6 children all together at one kitchen table. We do offer Literature, but we do not offer Math and Language Art since those are level learning subjects. You can mix and match the years and so not have to go in order if you like. Let me know if you have any other questions. You can also join our free network at http://network.latterdaylearning.org where you can ask any questions in our forum.
FINALLY!!!!!!!!!
I looked over last year for an LDS based history curriculum. Thank you for doing this. I am going to check this out some more.
How many years are you anticipating? Will it be all six, or it will be like Story of the World where it is four volumes repeated twice?
This will be a 6-year program. Some families will repeat a few years still, as it is a 4-13 age curriculum. We considered a four year program, but wanted to dive a bit deeper into each subject/time period. Consequently, the scope and sequence fit better into a 6-year program. Thank you! – Peter
Melissa,
Make sure and join our Free Network where you can ask any questions:) http://network.latterdaylearning.org/
About how many pages are in these manuals? I would just like to know for printing purposes if I purchase the downloaded copy.
Thanks!
The four main subjects (geography, science, literature, and history) are between 350 and 400 pages, the other two (music and art) are half that. We print double sided, with the first page in color and the remaining pages black. The printed version is definitely cheaper is you are planning to print it.
Quick question:
I’m seriously considering home school for my family after this school year is finished (so I’d start up Sep 2013, I’d be a year one while most everyone else here is in year two). I’d probably wait until July before purchasing, so would I get the full first year in one shipment, or would things still be split in quarters?
Hi Caroline. First, you should know that this program is asynchronous so you could teach the years in any order (kind of like seminary is taught for High Schoolers). I would, however, recommend, Year 1 next year since there is some chronology to History throughout the 6 years and it will be a very refined year to begin with. Yes, you would receive the entire Year 1 curriculum in this case. If you chose to use Year 2, you would receive the first 1/2 in August and the second 1/2 in January of 2014. Also, there will likely be more new families using Year 1 next year, than those moving from Year 1 to Year 2 if that makes any difference to you.
Also, if you’re close enough or can travel, don’t miss our LDL Homeschool Conference. this would be a great way to become more familiar with the program, methodology, philosophy, meet others using it, and play around with the eBook we’re building for the curriculum as well. Thanks and good luck! – Peter
I would love to see samples. My oldest will be 5 this year and I’m interested in homeschooling him…
Thanks,
Jessica
Wonderful, Jessica! Here are some samples. Take care! – Peter

I want to know if this program includes classes online?
I have two children which one is 11 and 15, middle and high school respectively.
Thanks.
Yes, we do have online classes for upper High School (10 – 12 grades), but unfortunately we have very limited options from 7 – 9 grades. We hope to include a few options this coming school year via Live/Recorded/Consulted classroom instruction, but our Independent Study and Live Distance Education courses will not be developed until the 2014/15 school year. You can view our current Online School course catalog using link below. Thank you for inquiring! – Peter

I would like to see a sample of your complete curriculum. Would you please send it to me via email? Thank you!
We have several samples of each subject here:

Let me know if you have any questions. Take care! – Peter (pknecht@ahsmail.com)
Can you clarify some things for me please? If I order year one it is appropriate for all elementary school ages? What is year 2 for then? An older age group or more informations till geared towards elementary age? I would love to see samples also. Thank you
Great questions. Yes, each “Year” of The Family School includes curriculum for teaching all K-8 grade age children together (history, literature, geography, science, art, music). Think of this like seminary, expect for that seminary is a 4 year program with 4 ages learning together, and this is a 6 year program with children 4-14 learning together. Samples are here:
http://latterdaylearning.org/free-lds-homeschool-resources-american-heritage-school/
Let me know if you have any questions. Thank you for connecting with us! – Peter (pknecht@ahsmail.com)
I am looking at the sample pages and wanted to also see the library as well. Your page’s instructions say to sign up for the network and click on “library.” I signed up but cannot find the link to the library anywhere! Can you help?
Sorry Jessica! If you look under the “network” tab in the main menu bar, the first option listed is the “Family School Library.” In this Library you’ll see a link for samples. Here is a direct link, however. Take care! – Peter

I have been waiting to purchase the Family School for a while now. I will be purchasing it in April 2013. I saw the note that said to wait to purchase after the Conference. Would this be Year 1 or Year 2? The age of my children is 9,8,6,5,4,2, and 9mo. Would you suggest purchasing Year 1 or 2 to begin with? I am really excited to get started. Thank you for your time.
That’s wonderful, Amanda. What a perfect situation for use of The Family School…lot’s of elementary age children. I’m certain you’ll find much success and joy in using this unique curriculum. Yes, I would wait until the conference. In fact, if at all possible, I would wait until the conference itself. At the conference we’ll be offering the curriculum at its largest discount (25%). Also, yes, I would highly recommend starting with Year 1 because it will be in its 2nd Edition, but Year 2 will be very similar, too. There is some chronology in the history and art subjects, so starting with Year 1 is nice. The info on the conference is here if you’re interested. Best of luck! – Peter

I will be unable to attend the conference because I live in the Northern Panhandle of Idaho. I do have family in the area. Will the curriculim be for sale at the vendors? Or is there a way for us to arrange for a family member to purchase a copy for us?
Absolutely, Amanda! In fact, there are so many that are far away and can’t attend. Consequently, we’ve decided to offer this promotion to everyone on our Network regardless of their attendance at the Conference this year. It will be a two day offer still, but you will receive an email with the promo code if you are signed up on our Network. Thank you for your interest in the program! Best of luck! – Peter
I want to get the extra needed material ordered. Will the material list be the same for the updated version? Thanks
I have heard great things about this program from friends. Could I get some samples of the cirriculim too?
That’s great to hear, Kristol! You can find samples for each curriculum here: http://latterdaylearning.org/free-lds-homeschool-resources-american-heritage-school/
Take care! – Peter Knecht
I love this! I cannot wait to purchase year one, I’ve been searching for a curriculum that incorporates the whole family and this is outstanding! My question is, does the 2nd edition in year 1 come in hard copy? Also what are the advantages of both hard copy and digital copy?
Kyndra, glad you are excited and we’re excited for you to join our school community! Yes, each year will come with both the digital and print version. The print version is nice because it provides something in hand, which is nice for teaching. Also, the print version comes with a free digital copy as well. The digital version for Year 1 2nd Edition will be available online with hyperlinks and accessible on tablet devices as well. This is one of the many improvements compared to the 1st Edition. Hope that helps! – Peter
Peter: thank you that helps a lot! I am a book in hand fan but I also think the hyperlinks and ability to access from multiple devises is very handy. Can I purchase the hard copy of the 2nd edition and get the digital copy that comes with it….but wait for the hard copy to be mailed. Or will the hard copy be ready for the conference? Sorry if that was confusing.
Yes, that’s a good idea. It gives you something you can use immediately, but then we’ll wait to send you the print of the 2nd Edition, as well as, another digital download of that 2nd Edition when it is available. Thanks again! – Peter
If I bought the hard copy would i be able to access it on say my tablet on some days that I needed it on there and not the hard copy. Also do children get a student copy or not?
Thanks I am SO excited about this!!!!!!!!!
Yes, all print customers will receive the digital version as well. Thank you for purchasing this and we’re excited to have you as a new member of our growing school community! – Peter
I am disappointed that the price was raised by fifty dollars.
We are adding workbooks, time lines and geography cards as a part of the curriculum.
